Surviving Perth Summers
Perth summers test every garden. Extended 40C+ heatwaves, water restrictions, and UV intensity mean your garden maintenance strategy must be summer-focused. Here is how to keep your garden alive and thriving.
Preparation (November)
Deep mulch everything (75mm minimum). Service your reticulation system. Apply wetting agents to sandy soil. Move shade-loving potted plants under cover. Install shade cloth over vulnerable plants.
During Heatwaves
Water deeply but infrequently (encouraging deep roots). Water early morning (before 9am). Avoid pruning or transplanting in extreme heat. Do not fertilise — stressed plants cannot absorb nutrients. Mow lawn higher (longer grass shades roots).
Planning Ahead
Consider replacing struggling plants with heat-tolerant WA natives or artificial grass for lawns. Connect with Perth landscapers for summer-proofing your garden. See our seasonal calendar.
