The Perth Sandy Soil Challenge
Perth sits on the Swan Coastal Plain — predominantly deep, fine sand that drains fast and holds almost no nutrients or moisture. Every Perth garden benefits from improved soil, whether through raised beds or amendment of existing ground.
Improving Drainage-Happy Sand
Add organic matter: compost, well-rotted manure, and soil conditioner at 50-100mm depth, dug in to 200mm. Apply wetting agents (Saturaid, Wettasoil) to combat hydrophobic sand. Top-dress with clay-based soil improver annually.
Raised Beds Alternative
Rather than fighting sand, build raised garden beds filled with premium garden mix. This is especially effective for vegetables, herbs, and feature gardens. Line the base with cardboard to prevent sand mixing upward.
Ongoing Maintenance
Continuous mulching slowly builds organic matter. Annual soil testing helps track improvement. Connect with Perth gardeners who understand sandy soil management. See our maintenance calendar and mulching guide.
