Sleeper Retaining Walls — Concrete & Timber Options Compared | Landscaping Perth

Concrete vs Timber Sleepers Sleeper retaining walls are the most popular wall type in Perth. The key decision is between concrete sleepers (longer lasting, more expensive) and timber sleepers (natural look, more affordable). Both work well in Perth’s sandy soils.

Concrete Sleeper Walls Concrete sleepers offer 50+ year lifespan, termite immunity, and consistent quality. Modern concrete sleepers come in wood-grain, stone, and smooth finishes. They are the go-to choice for structural walls and are available at most Perth landscape suppliers.

Timber Sleeper Walls Treated pine sleepers cost less ($150-$350/m2 vs $250-$500/m2 for concrete) but last 15-25 years depending on timber and treatment. Hardwood sleepers like jarrah last longer but cost more. Timber retaining walls suit garden beds and low walls beautifully.

Making the Right Choice For walls over 1 metre, concrete sleepers are strongly recommended for longevity. For garden edging and low walls under 500mm, timber is often the perfect budget-friendly choice. Check the detailed cost breakdown and read about DIY vs professional installation.
