Retaining Wall Height Regulations WA — When You Need Approval | Landscaping Perth

WA 500mm Threshold Western Australia has the lowest retaining wall approval threshold in Australia at just 500mm. Any retaining wall over 500mm in height requires a building permit from your local council. This is significantly lower than other states (NSW and QLD allow up to 600mm or 1 metre without approval). See our full council approval guide for step-by-step details.

What Approval Involves For walls over 500mm, you need: engineering certification from a structural engineer ($1,500-$3,000), a building permit application ($200-$500), and in some cases planning approval if the wall affects neighbours or streetscape. The process typically takes 4-8 weeks.

Consequences of Non-Compliance Building without approval can result in council orders to demolish and rebuild, fines, and complications when selling your property. Insurance may also not cover damage from unapproved structures. Professional retaining wall builders will handle the approval process for you.

Getting Started Always check with your local council before building. Get matched with local Perth builders who understand WA regulations. For cost planning, see our retaining wall cost guide and read about proper drainage requirements.
