Why Merbau Dominates Merbau is the most popular decking timber in Perth and across Australia. Its rich reddish-brown colour, natural durability, and competitive pricing make it the default choice for Perth deck builders.

Characteristics Class 2 durability (20-25 year lifespan above ground). Naturally resistant to termites and rot. Moderately hard (Janka 8.6). Initially leeches tannin (red staining) — avoid near light-coloured surfaces for the first few months.

Maintenance in Perth Oil every 12-18 months to maintain colour and prevent greying. Perth’s dry climate means less moisture-related issues but more UV exposure. Use a decking oil with UV protection. Clean with a mild detergent and soft broom before each oiling.
