Planning Your Wall
Before any construction begins, you need to determine wall height (remember WA’s 500mm threshold — see our approval guide), choose materials, and plan drainage. For walls over 500mm, engage a structural engineer first.
Site Preparation
Mark out the wall line, excavate a trench for the footing (typically 300mm deep and 200mm wider than the wall), and compact the base. In Perth’s sandy soils, excavation is generally straightforward, but rocky areas in the Perth Hills may require extra effort.
Construction Process
Install ag pipe drainage at the base, pour or compact the footing, set the first course level (this is critical), and build up one course at a time. Backfill with drainage gravel and install geotextile fabric between gravel and soil.
