Cottage Garden Design in Australia — A Perth Climate Guide | Landscaping Perth

Cottage Gardens in a Hot Climate The classic English cottage garden needs adaptation for Perth’s hot, dry Mediterranean climate. The key is choosing plants that create the same romantic, overflowing effect but thrive without constant watering. Garden designers experienced with Perth conditions can achieve stunning results.

Perth-Friendly Cottage Plants Lavender, rosemary, salvias, gaura, and agapanthus give that cottage feel while loving Perth’s climate. Add climbing roses (select heat-tolerant varieties like Iceberg), catmint, and ornamental grasses. Native alternatives like Scaevola and Dampiera add Australian character.

Structure and Hardscape Gravel paths, arched arbours, limestone edging, and a central focal point (birdbath, sundial, or urn) provide the bones. Raised garden beds add depth and make planting easier in Perth’s sandy soil.

Getting Started Start with structure, then add plants in autumn (Perth’s best planting season). Get matched with Perth landscapers who specialise in cottage-style gardens. For more ideas, see our colour scheme guide.
